Fire Hydrant Maintenance Scheduled for May 2026

April 16, 2026

Every year, the Franklin Square Water District conducts hydrant flushing as a preventive maintenance measure to ensure both water quality and public safety. While it may look like water is being wasted, hydrant flushing is essential for several reasons:

Why Yearly Maintenance Is Required

Water Quality Check: Flushing removes naturally occurring minerals, sediment, and rust that settle at the bottom of water mains over time. High-velocity water flow scours the interior of the mains, removing sediment and helping ensure that the water reaching your home remains clear and fresh.

Stagnation Prevention: In areas with low water usage or at dead ends in the system, water can become stagnant. Routine flushing keeps the water moving, ensuring fresh water reaches all customers and helping maintain proper chlorine levels for safety.

Emergency Readiness: Fire hydrants are mechanical devices that need to be exercised to stay in good working order. Annual flushing allows crews to inspect each hydrant for leaks or mechanical issues, ensuring hydrants will function immediately during a fire emergency.

What Residents Should Expect

Temporary Discoloration: You may notice yellowish or brownish water during or shortly after flushing in your area. This is caused by harmless sediment being stirred up and is typically not a health hazard.

Quick Fix: If you experience discolored water, run your cold water tap for a few minutes, ideally through a bathtub or outdoor spigot, until the water runs clear.

Laundry Advice: Avoid doing laundry during scheduled flushing times, as discolored water can stain white clothes.

If your laundry does become stained, do not put it in the dryer. Keep the items wet and rewash them using Red-B-Gone, which is supplied by the Franklin Square Water District.
