Microplastics and Bottled Water: What Residents Should Know
April 23, 2026
The Franklin Square Water District is aware of recent media coverage regarding microplastics in bottled water. We understand that residents may have questions about this topic. The following information is provided to help place these findings in context.
What Are Microplastics?
Microplastics are very small plastic particles that can be present in the environment. They may originate from the breakdown of larger plastic materials or from manufacturing processes. These particles have been detected in a variety of sources, including air, food, and drinking water.
Summary of Recent Findings
Recent studies estimate that individuals who consume bottled water on a daily basis may ingest a higher number of microplastic particles compared to those who primarily drink tap water. One widely cited estimate suggests that bottled water consumption could result in tens of thousands of additional microplastic particles ingested annually. It is important to note that these figures are based on ongoing research and may vary depending on study methods and assumptions.
Health Considerations
At this time, the potential health effects of microplastic exposure are still being studied. While microplastics have been detected in the human body, scientific and regulatory agencies continue to evaluate what levels, if any, may pose a risk to human health. There is currently no established regulatory standard for microplastics in drinking water.
Public Drinking Water and Oversight
The Franklin Square Water District remains committed to providing a safe and reliable drinking water supply to the community. The following efforts are part of the District’s ongoing mission to ensure water supply purity and quality for all residents.
- The District continuously monitors water quality
- Treatment and distribution systems are maintained to prevent contamination
- Water is regularly tested in accordance with New York State and Federal regulations
- The system is designed to protect the water supply from external sources of contamination
Bottled Water and Consumer Choice
Bottled water is not subject to the same distribution system protections as public drinking water systems and may be affected by packaging materials and storage conditions. Residents who have concerns about microplastics may wish to consider using tap water as a primary source of drinking water.
Continuing Evaluation
The Franklin Square Water District continues to monitor emerging research and guidance related to microplastics and other contaminants. As additional information becomes available, the District will provide updates as appropriate. Residents with questions may contact the District office for further information.
